SSU mourns alum Larry Allen, NFL Hall of Famer

 One of Sonoma State’s most celebrated athletes, Larry Allen, died on Sunday, June 2. He was 52. No cause of death has been given..

 

Allen was the first student-athlete in the history of SSU football to be drafted into the National Football League when he was picked by the Cowboys in 1994. He played for the Cowboys from 1994 to 2005, winning a Super Bowl in 1995. 

He was named to the Pro Bowl 11 times and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2013. Though he spent his final two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, he officially retired from the Cowboys.His name is enshrined in the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor at AT&T (formerly Cowboys) Stadium. In 2019, Allen was named to the NFL's top-100 list, which ranked the best players in league history. 


During the two seasons Allen played for Sonoma State (1992-93) he was twice named All-American and was named the Northern California Athletic Conference (NCAC) Offensive Player of the Year in 1993. That year Allen gave up only one sack and was part of an offense that established 10 new school records under then-head coach

   INDIANAPOLIS – After the Indiana Fever’s 71-70 win over the Chicago Sky, the topic of discussion is the altercation between Sky guard Chennedy Carter and Fever guard Caitlin Clark at the end of the third quarter.  Carter made a jump shot with 15.8 seconds left in the quarter, then prepared to guard Clark, who was set to receive the inbounds pass. Before the ball was thrown into play, Carter lodged her right forearm into Clark’s back, sending Clark to the floor. The play was ruled an away-from-the-play foul due to it happening before the inbound, but it wasn’t upgraded to a flagrant or technical foul. President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday signed into law the bill to revert to Nigeria’s old national anthem which was dropped by a military government in 1978. The newly re-adopted anthem, which begins "Nigeria, We Hail Thee," was written by Lillian Jean Williams in 1959 and composed by Frances Berda. Speaking on his first anniversary in office, President Tinubu said the anthem symbolised Nigeria's diversity. But many have questioned his priorities amid the cost-of-living crisis. Israeli tanks penetrate the centre of Rafah and air attacks persist across the city despite global calls to end the carnage.

  Israel has continued its assault on Rafah, ignoring a draft resolution to the UN Security Council to “stop the killing” in the city in southern Gaza. New air attacks were reported across the southernmost city on Wednesday morning, hours after witnesses and a Palestinian security source said Israeli tanks had penetrated the heart of Rafah. People are currently inside their homes because anyone who moves is being shot at by Israeli drones,” resident Abdel Khatib said. Israeli air strikes targeted various parts of the city, including the vicinity of the Badr camp and the Zourob roundabout west of the city, according to Palestinian news agency Shehab. A complete shutdown of telecommunications and internet services throughout Rafah is also reported.
