Marathon man Djokovic beats Musetti in latest-ever finish at French Open

Defending champion wins a four-and-half-hour epic to keep alive his hopes of winning a 25th Grand Slam title.

Novak Djokovic’s bid for a 25th Grand Slam briefly hung by a thread on a cold and damp night at Roland Garros but the Serbian battled back for a 7-5, 6-7(6), 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 win over Lorenzo Musetti in the latest-ever French Open finish.

The reigning champion showcased the iron will that has made him one of the game’s greatest players, to avoid defeat in a thrilling third-round contest, which got under way at 10:37pm local time (20:37 GMT) on Saturday.

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday signed into law the bill to revert to Nigeria’s old national anthem which was dropped by a military government in 1978. The newly re-adopted anthem, which begins "Nigeria, We Hail Thee," was written by Lillian Jean Williams in 1959 and composed by Frances Berda. Speaking on his first anniversary in office, President Tinubu said the anthem symbolised Nigeria's diversity. But many have questioned his priorities amid the cost-of-living crisis. Israeli tanks penetrate the centre of Rafah and air attacks persist across the city despite global calls to end the carnage.

  Israel has continued its assault on Rafah, ignoring a draft resolution to the UN Security Council to “stop the killing” in the city in southern Gaza. New air attacks were reported across the southernmost city on Wednesday morning, hours after witnesses and a Palestinian security source said Israeli tanks had penetrated the heart of Rafah. People are currently inside their homes because anyone who moves is being shot at by Israeli drones,” resident Abdel Khatib said. Israeli air strikes targeted various parts of the city, including the vicinity of the Badr camp and the Zourob roundabout west of the city, according to Palestinian news agency Shehab. A complete shutdown of telecommunications and internet services throughout Rafah is also reported.
